Hi, I'm Lucy Patterson. I live on top of a windy hill on the wild West Coast of Auckland, New Zealand with my man, my mum, two dogs, a cat, lots of chickens and a pig called Alice. I teach Reiki (a kind of hands-on healing), craft beautiful things and grow some of our own food.
This is my journal about the things that inspire me in every day life, projects I'm doing, and the little hands-on moments that make living worthwhile. I hope you'll enjoy stopping by for a bit.

Big skies
Yesterday evening, as the sun set, I was out on our deck taking the photographs for my ‘Coral, shell and bone’ post. The sky was going through its own coral colour palette and I got to thinking about when I … Continue reading

Coral, shell and bone
I’m drawn to coral like a treasure hunter. It makes me think of Tibetan necklaces and the ancient Silk Route and holidays on tropical beaches. Rough pieces washed up on a beach in Fiji; smooth beads bought from an Afghani … Continue reading

Autumn Blues
Yesterday I had the Autumn blues. I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe it was the moon, or the heaviness of the weather but, whatever the reason, I found myself mid afternoon lying prone on the couch with our large, black, … Continue reading
Monday’s Inspiration: Creativity

Header artwork
I thought I’d show you the process I went through in creating my header illustration. As a self-confessed perfectionist, doing illustrations like this is very liberating for me. By their very nature they’re not sophisticated or detailed or over-thought. I … Continue reading
Birthday pancakes
Yesterday we went to a pancake-breakfast birthday celebration for one of my lovely friends. When my man and I arrived, there were already piles of freshly cooked pancakes (including a spelt flour / soy milk option that was soo yummy). Everyone … Continue reading

My new crafting space
Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone, but at the moment, only about 4 people (other than myself) even know about my blog! Now, I know that’s not exactly the point of having a blog but… You see, I decided I’d start blogging … Continue reading

Hands-on dog food!
I just took a break from my work to put on a pot of dog food to cook. We make our own dog food in a slow cooker, using meat scraps from the local butcher and soup mix (containing green … Continue reading
Monday’s inspiration: Honour
The Paper Fan Inspiration Card I picked out today for the week ahead, is: Honour. For me at the moment it reminds me to take better care of myself. I’ve not been so good at that lately. I need to go … Continue reading

Kumara harvest
One of the things we harvested this week was our crop of kumara (Ipomoea batatas – Maori sweet potatoes). We get our tupu (young plants) from the Koanga Institute. The institute holds a very special collection of ancient kumara, many of which … Continue reading
